Software Engineer - Automation Technology

  • £50,000 - £60,000 basic salary (depending on experience).

Are you the programming expert that compliments our Sales Distributors, Commercial Team, and Project Engineers in the commissioning phase for OEM and end-user sites?

As a programming expert, your tasks are to prepare the application program structure and to carry out the programming of the machine functions. This includes programming of logic, motion control functions, and the integration into the field bus communications and the commissioning. Your high level technical support in the commissioning phase is integral in the sales process to maximise repeat business. Commissioning of the software function will be carried out in house (for systems) or at OEM or end-user site.

What professional knowledge, experience, and educational qualifications do you need to be considered for this role?

  • You must have previous relevant experience leading a project and project team (technical and commercial).

  • You must have a strong educational background in a relevant engineering discipline (ideally degree qualified in Mechatronic Engineering or similar.

  • You must be able to work independently and lead commercially biased project teams. Your performance is measured by results and will require you to work effectively under pressure. 

  • Your home address must be commutable to Northampton as your first 6 months employment will require you to work closely and shadow Project Engineers and BDM's based at the site full-time.

What you are accountable for in this role:

  • Preparing the automation concept for the  application including a concept for the software structure, feasibility checks.

  • Proposes customer specific solutions in close  cooperation with the customer, in accordance with the regulations of the  industry segment in question (Machinery Directive, etc.)

  • Programming of the application program.  Realizing the desired machine functions within the PLC and/or Motion  Controller. Creates Requirement Specification together with the customer.

  • Ensures that deadlines are met and the  overall realisation of the project. And act as a second level hotline for the  realized products.

  • Reports all relevant activities and  developments relating to its projects and ensures project data is correctly  managed in the information systems.

  • Maintain and adjust the PLC application  program after commissioning possibly support during end user acceptance on  end user sit

Ideally you will be competent in all or some of the following technical competencies:

  • Programming to Modbus Protocol.
  • Maintaining and Adjusting PLC programs to customer needs. 
  • Use of network Interfaces such as USB, RS232/485, Ethernet.
  • Commissioning and customer support of equipment on and off site.
  • Programming of PLCs and HMIs to IEC 61131-3 using CoDeSys 2.3 & 3.5
  • PWM control; direct proportional valves 
  • Configuration of I/O, CAN nodes & J1939 communications in CoDeSys
