We’re supporting a fast-growing manufacturer by appointing an International Shipping & Customs Specialist. This is a hands-on, high-responsibility role covering global lanes, compliance leadership, documentation, and shipping systems.

Job Title: International Shipping & Customs Specialist
Location: Smethwick, West Midlands
Salary: £35,000 – £40,000 (Depending on experience)
Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:30am – 5:30pm

Job Role:

  • Planning and executing daily global shipments (parcel, pallet, LTL/FTL, air, courier)
  • Balancing speed, cost, and reliability across international lanes
  • Building and managing a carrier panel — running RFPs, negotiating rates, setting SLAs, and leading QBRs
  • Owning all export/import documentation including invoices, packing lists, COO, MSDS/SDS, prior notices, and broker instructions
  • Correctly classifying products with HS codes and maintaining compliance master data
  • Applying Incoterms® 2020 accurately and managing duties, VAT, tariffs, and IOSS
  • Leading trade compliance activities for UK/EU/US shipments
  • Managing TMS/label platforms (ShipStation, Shopify/WMS integrations) and building dashboards for cost, OTD, damages, and customs holds
  • Acting as the primary liaison for carriers, brokers, partners, and internal teams
  • Improving packaging, carrier SOPs, and pre-clearance workflows to reduce delays and damages
  • Reducing WISMO tickets through proactive communication and issue resolution
  • Writing SOPs, training teams, forecasting shipping capacity, and managing freight budgets

Skills and Experience Required:

  • Extensive international shipping/logistics experience with hands-on trade compliance
  • Deep knowledge of HS codes, Incoterms® 2020, duty/VAT structures, IOSS, de minimis rules, and customs processes (UK/EU/US minimum)
  • Proven success running carrier RFPs, negotiating rates, and delivering measurable savings
  • Strong experience producing and managing export/import documentation
  • Confident using TMS/e-commerce/WMS tools (ShipStation, Metapack, Easyship, Linnworks, Descartes, Shopify, etc.)
  • Advanced Excel/Sheets skills for reporting and cost analysis
  • Clear, calm communicator who builds strong relationships across carriers, brokers, and internal teams

Nice to Have:

  • CILT, IoE&IT, IATA/FIATA or customs compliance certifications
  • Experience with UK CDS entries or ICS2 readiness
  • Background in regulated consumer products (e.g., food/supplements)
