Know your way around CAD, but also understand what actually happens when a drawing gets handed to a welder? Good. We should probably talk.
This is an opportunity where you will take responsibility for the CAD and drawing function while working closely with the wider engineering and fabrication team.
You’ll be involved throughout the process, from customer requirements and supplier discussions through to supporting the people manufacturing the finished product.
It would suit somebody who enjoys variety, likes being close to the practical side of engineering and wants genuine ownership of their own work.
Job Title: CAD Engineer / Draughtsman
Money: £40,000 – £45,000 per annum
Hours: Monday to Friday, ideally 7:30am – 4:00pm
Location: Leicestershire
Contract: Full time, Permanent
Other benefits: Discretionary annual bonus based on company performance, 20 days holiday + Bank Holidays, various company events, workplace pension and free on site parking.
What’s the job?
This is a proper hands on CAD role within a small engineering business.
Customers will regularly come to the company with an idea or requirement for a trailer or fabricated product, and it’ll be your job to turn that into something that can actually be manufactured.
Day to day, you’ll be:
- Producing and amending 2D and 3D engineering drawings.
- Working mainly with AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor.
- Using SolidWorks where required.
- Taking customer ideas and turning them into practical designs ready for manufacture.
- Producing new designs and drawings from scratch for bespoke customer requirements.
- Using an extensive catalogue of existing drawings as a reference where appropriate.
- Converting customer supplied 2D drawings into 3D models.
- Creating Bills of Materials.
- Supporting estimating and quoting for new work.
- Speaking directly with customers about their requirements.
- Liaising with suppliers regarding components, technical information and pricing.
- Working closely with the welders and fabrication team when questions come up during manufacture.
- Making sure designs take relevant trailer, axle and component requirements into account.
They’ve got drawings going back decades, so there is plenty of existing information to work from, but the business is also doing more bespoke work where customers come to them with an idea and need something designed specifically for the job.
What experience do you need?
You need to come from a steel, fabrication or closely related engineering background.
You don’t necessarily need to have designed trailers before. The trailer specific knowledge and regulations can be taught.
What they do need is somebody who understands steel and fabricated products, and who appreciates that what looks good on a CAD screen still needs to be practical for somebody to actually manufacture.
You’ll ideally have:
- Previous experience as a CAD Engineer, Draughtsman, Design Engineer or similar.
- Experience designing steel or fabricated products.
- A good understanding of fabrication and manufacturing processes.
- Experience working with both 2D and 3D CAD.
- Experience using AutoCAD, Inventor, SolidWorks or similar mechanical design software.
- The ability to work independently and take ownership of your own workload.
- Confidence speaking directly with customers and suppliers.
- Experience producing Bills of Materials.
- An understanding of estimating and quoting would be useful.
If your background is within areas such as:
- Trailer manufacturing
- Commercial vehicle body building
- Agricultural machinery
- Steel fabrication
- Structural steel
- Sheet metal
- Specialist vehicles
- Material handling equipment
- Other fabricated steel products
…then we’d be interested in speaking with you.
The environment
This isn’t a role where you’ll be one of twenty designers sitting in a large engineering department.
You’ll be working within a small, hands on engineering business alongside experienced welders and fabricators.
You’ll work closely with the wider team and will have direct contact with the customers and suppliers involved in the projects you’re designing.
For somebody who likes being close to the actual product and wants ownership of the drawing function rather than being a small part of a huge design team, it could suit you very well.
