Position: Quality Inspector / CMM Programmer
Location: Rugby
Hours: Monday to Thursday 8am – 4:30pm | Friday 8am – 3:30pm
Salary: Up to £17 per hour – open to discussion based on experience
Contract: Permanent

We’re looking for an experienced Quality Inspector to join a busy sheet metal engineering business in Rugby, and when we say Quality Inspector, we don’t mean walking around with a clipboard occasionally pointing at things.

This is a genuinely technical inspection role involving FARO Arm / CMM equipment, PolyWorks, engineering drawings, GD&T and precision sheet metal components.

If you can programme inspection routines from scratch and the words first article inspection don’t require an immediate Google search, keep reading.

The company

You’ll be joining a long standing engineering business providing a full in house sheet metal and manufacturing service.

The workshop covers everything from laser cutting and punching through to press brake, fabrication, MIG/TIG welding, robotic welding, waterjet cutting, painting and finishing.

The work is varied too, covering defence related projects, vehicle manufacturing, subcontract engineering, retail equipment, displays and other bespoke components.

In other words, you won’t spend the next three years inspecting the same washer.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll be responsible for making sure manufactured parts, assemblies and finished products actually match what the drawing says they should.

That will include:

• Programming and operating FARO Arm and/or CMM equipment
• Creating inspection routines from scratch
• Working extensively with PolyWorks
• Carrying out first off and First Article Inspections
• Completing in process and final inspection
• Reading and interpreting detailed engineering and manufacturing drawings
• Working confidently with GD&T
• Comparing measured components against drawings and CAD data
• Producing and maintaining inspection reports
• Identifying defects, dimensional variation and manufacturing issues
• Raising and documenting NCRs / non conformances
• Supporting root cause investigation and corrective actions
• Checking components using traditional measuring equipment
• Helping maintain calibration and condition of inspection equipment

You’ll be working closely with production, so this isn’t a Quality role hidden away in an office sending emails about problems from thirty feet away.

You’ll be on the shop floor, checking parts, speaking with the people making them and helping catch issues before they become expensive piles of scrap.

• FARO CAM2
• SolidWorks
• Amada FabriVision

PolyWorks experience is essential.

You’ll also need previous hands on experience with FARO Arm and/or CMM inspection equipment, along with the ability to programme inspection routines from scratch.

Previous Amada FabriVision experience is not required.

It’s specialist kit and the company understands that very few people have used it before, so full training will be provided.

Ideally, you’ll have:

• Previous experience working as a Quality Inspector / Quality Technician / CMM Programmer
• Experience using FARO Arm and/or CMM equipment
• Working knowledge of PolyWorks
• Ability to programme inspection routines from scratch
• Experience within sheet metal, fabrication, aerospace, automotive or precision engineering
• Engineering drawing interpretation skills
• Good understanding of GD&T
• Experience carrying out First Article Inspections
• Experience dealing with non conforming components
• Understanding of dimensional inspection
• Confidence using micrometers, verniers/calipers, thread gauges, pin gauges, height gauges and protractors

Experience with CAM2 and SolidWorks would also be useful.

The important bit

You need to care about accuracy. We mean genuinely care. If a dimension is wrong, you notice it. If a component doesn’t match the drawing, you question it. If something keeps going out of tolerance, you want to know why, rather than simply rejecting another ten parts and carrying on with your afternoon.

The company produces varied precision sheet metal work, so they need someone confident enough to make decisions and experienced enough to know when something isn’t right.

The hours

• Monday to Thursday: 8am – 4:30pm | Friday: 8am – 3:30pm
• Approximately 39 hours per week
• 30 minute lunch break
• Two 10 minute tea breaks
• Saturday morning overtime may be available
• Overtime paid at 1.3x after 39 hours and weekends

This isn’t a repetitive inspection role where you’re checking thousands of identical parts and slowly forgetting what month it is. They produce a broad mix of sheet metal components across different customers, drawings, materials and manufacturing processes. You’ll have proper metrology equipment to work with, varied products to inspect and a production team around you where Quality genuinely matters. They want someone experienced, dependable and confident who can become part of the team long term.
