Not every CNC Turner gets to work on 5 metre components, exotic alloys and proper precision engineering challenges.

Position: CNC Turner (Programmer / Setter / Operator)

Location: Skelmersdale
Hours: Monday to Friday, 08:00 – 16:30
Contract: Permanent
Salary: Premium rates available, negotiable depending on experience

Some CNC Turner jobs are button pushing. This is not one of them.

This role is for someone who actually enjoys the craft of machining long components, difficult materials, tight tolerances, Fanuc programming, offline CAD/CAM and proper engineering challenges that need thought, skill and patience.

You’ll be joining a specialist precision engineering environment working on high value components for demanding sectors, including aerospace, power generation, oil and gas, defence and other high specification industries.

The work is varied, technical and genuinely interesting. You won’t be stood in front of the same basic job every day wondering where your life choices went wrong.

You’ll be machining long components up to 5 metres, working with fixed and travelling steadies, controlling deflection, reading detailed drawings and producing parts from materials such as super duplex, duplex, Inconel 718, X750, Hastelloy and Monel.

This is a clean, well equipped engineering facility with a relaxed working environment, free refreshments and a team that values people who know what they’re doing.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll be responsible for programming, setting and operating CNC turning machines, working mainly with Fanuc controls.

Day to day, you’ll be:

  • Programming, setting and operating CNC turning machines
  • Reading and interpreting detailed engineering drawings
  • Writing, editing and proving CNC programs using Fanuc
  • Generating programs offline using CAPT or OneCNC
  • Machining long components up to 5 metres
  • Using fixed and travelling steadies to control deflection
  • Working with exotic and high performance materials
  • Selecting tooling and planning the best machining approach
  • Using precision measuring equipment to check your own work
  • Recording production and inspection data accurately
  • Working to quality procedures, safety standards and customer requirements

What we’re looking for

We’re looking for a proper CNC Turner, not someone who has just stood near a lathe and absorbed confidence through osmosis.

You’ll need to be:

  • Time served, ideally with NVQ Level 3 or equivalent
  • Experienced in CNC turning within a precision engineering environment
  • Confident programming, setting and operating
  • Comfortable with Fanuc controls
  • Experienced machining long components using steadies
  • Able to work from detailed engineering drawings
  • Used to machining exotic or high specification materials
  • Confident with inspection equipment and quality checks
  • Organised, reliable and able to communicate well with the wider team

Experience that would make you stand out

  • CAD/CAM programming experience
  • CAPT or OneCNC experience
  • Aerospace, oil and gas, defence, nuclear or highspec engineering background
  • Experience working to ISO 9001:2015 quality standards
  • Strong long turning experience on components between 3 and 5 metres

Why this role is worth a conversation

This is a good move for a CNC Turner who wants more than basic production work.

You’ll be joining a growing specialist engineering business with strong in house capability across precision machining, coatings, grinding and finishing. The components are challenging, the materials are interesting and the right person will be paid properly for the level of skill involved.

If you like technical turning, long work, exotic materials and proper engineering problems to solve, this should be on your radar.
