Can you set a CNC Laser, read the drawing and spot a bad cut before it turns an expensive sheet of metal into scrap? Good. We should probably talk.

We’re recruiting an experienced CNC Laser Setter / Operator for a fantastic precision sheet metal manufacturer in Loughborough. You’ll be working with modern laser cutting machinery, producing components from engineering drawings and taking responsibility for getting each job set correctly before full production begins.

Job Title: CNC Laser Setter / Operator
Money: Starting from £15.50 per hour
Hours / Shifts: Monday to Friday, rotating 6:00am – 2:00pm and 2:00pm – 10:00pm
Other benefits: Enhanced overtime, profit share, healthcare plan, enhanced sick pay, group life cover, 30 days’ holiday including Bank Holidays and a potential additional £1 per hour multi skilled bonus once permanent and trained across additional areas.

What’s the job?

This is more than loading material and pressing the start button.

You’ll be expected to understand the job you’re running, load the correct programme, set or adjust the machine where required and make sure the finished components are right before they move onto the next stage of production.

Day to day, you’ll be:

  • Setting and operating CNC laser cutting machinery.
  • Loading the correct programmes for each job.
  • Adjusting machine settings where required.
  • Reading and working from engineering drawings.
  • Producing components in mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium.
  • Checking finished components using Verniers, callipers and micrometers.
  • Identifying poor cut quality, incorrect dimensions or other cutting faults.
  • Making adjustments before unnecessary material is wasted.
  • Loading raw sheet material and unloading finished components.
  • Carrying out basic machine checks.
  • Assisting with fault finding where required.
  • Keeping the machine and surrounding work area clean, safe and organised.

The important bit is that you’re interested in what the machine is actually doing.

If something isn’t cutting correctly, they want somebody who notices, understands that there’s a problem and reacts before running another twenty parts exactly the same way.

What experience do you need?

You’ll need previous experience operating CNC or laser cutting machinery within a sheet metal, fabrication or precision manufacturing environment.

Previous experience setting CNC Laser machinery would be particularly useful.

Experience using:

  • Amada
  • Trumpf
  • Bystronic
  • Or similar CNC laser equipment

…would transfer well.

You should also be confident:

  • Reading and interpreting engineering drawings.
  • Loading and selecting the correct programmes.
  • Setting or adjusting machinery for different jobs.
  • Working with different materials and sheet thicknesses.
  • Inspecting finished components using engineering measuring equipment.
  • Recognising poor cut quality or other production issues.
  • Making sensible adjustments where required.
  • Working independently once you understand the job.
  • Working as part of a wider manufacturing team.

This company operate modern Amada fibre laser machinery, so this is a good opportunity for somebody who already understands laser cutting but wants to develop their technical knowledge further.

Why this role is worth considering

You’ll be joining a large precision sheet metal manufacturing facility with significant investment in modern machinery and automation.

The wider site covers:

Fibre Laser Cutting | CNC Punching | CNC Press Brake Forming | Panel Bending | Welding | Powder Coating | Assembly

So you won’t be working in isolation on one ageing machine in the corner of a workshop.

There is also a genuine opportunity to broaden your skills across other machinery and production processes.

Once permanent, employees who become trained and competent across additional areas can earn a potential extra £1 per hour through the multi skilled bonus.

That means there’s actually a financial reason to develop rather than being rewarded for learning three more jobs with a slightly firmer handshake.

What happens when you become permanent?

The permanent employment package includes:

  • Profit share scheme.
  • Potential multi skilled bonus worth an additional £1 per hour.
  • Enhanced overtime rates.
  • 30 days’ holiday including Bank Holidays.
  • Enhanced sick pay.
  • Healthcare plan.
  • Group life cover.
  • Training across additional machinery and production processes.
  • Opportunities to progress into more skilled and responsible positions.
  • Cycle to Work scheme.
