Ever looked at a seriously impressive building and wondered who actually designs all those metal panels, shapes and details on the outside?

Well, someone has to. And that someone could be you.

We’re recruiting for a specialist architectural cladding and metal fabrication manufacturer in Northampton, and they’re looking for a CAD Design Engineer who knows their way around SolidWorks, can work with AutoCAD and enjoys seeing their designs become actual, physical products.

No designing imaginary gadgets that never make it past a computer screen. No spending your days buried in quotations and costing spreadsheets.

Real products. Real manufacturing. Real buildings.

The Important Bits

Job Title: CAD Design Engineer

Location: Northampton, NN4

Salary: £35,000 per annum

Hours: Monday to Friday, 8am – 5pm

Contract: Permanent from Day 1

So, What Will You Actually Be Designing?

Think architectural aluminium panels, rainscreen cladding, flashings, copings and bespoke sheet metal components.

The sort of things that turn a fairly ordinary looking building into something worth looking at.

This company manufactures specialist metal products used across the construction industry, and they need someone who can take customer drawings and requirements and turn them into accurate, manufacture-ready designs.

Some jobs might involve fairly straightforward 2D profiles. Others could involve more intricate 3D components with multiple folds, shapes and details.

You’ll be the link between what the customer wants and what the factory needs to make it happen.

What Will Your Day Look Like?

There’s plenty of variety here, but your main responsibilities will include:

  • Using SolidWorks to create accurate 3D models of fabricated metal and cladding components.
  • Producing and amending 2D drawings in AutoCAD.
  • Reviewing customer orders, technical drawings and specifications to understand exactly what’s required.
  • Checking customer requirements against existing products and manufacturing capabilities.
  • Creating profiles and flat patterns ready for CNC nesting and production.
  • Liaising directly with customers to clarify drawings, dimensions and technical requirements.
  • Working alongside the manufacturing team to ensure designs can be produced accurately.
  • Potentially assisting with CNC nesting and Bills of Materials, depending on your experience.

There is no quoting, estimating or costing involved.

Your focus is on the technical side: drawings, designs, accuracy and getting things ready to manufacture.

Who Are We Looking For?

First and foremost, we need someone who can confidently use SolidWorks and has experience working with technical drawings.

Ideally, you’ll also be comfortable using AutoCAD for 2D work.

But we’re just as interested in what you’ve been designing as we are in what your previous job title says.

You could currently be a CAD Technician, CAD Engineer, Design Engineer, SolidWorks Designer or Sheet Metal Designer.

Experience in any of the following areas would be particularly interesting:

  • Sheet metal fabrication and folded metal components.
  • Architectural aluminium products.
  • Rainscreen cladding or facade systems.
  • Roofing flashings, copings, fascias and soffits.
  • Precision sheet metal manufacturing.
  • Bespoke metalwork or fabricated assemblies.

If you’ve previously worked with architectural aluminium products, you’ll probably recognise a lot of the work involved.

That said, you don’t need to have spent your entire career designing cladding. If you’re a capable CAD professional with good manufacturing knowledge and transferable experience, we’d still love to hear from you.

An understanding of how sheet metal is cut, folded and fabricated would be a real advantage.

What’s In It For You?

Apart from having the satisfaction of seeing your drawings turned into products that actually end up on buildings?

  • £35,000 annual salary.
  • Monday to Friday working hours, 8am – 5pm.
  • 20 days’ holiday plus bank holidays.
  • Approximately two week Christmas shutdown.
  • Company pension.
  • PPE and uniform provided
  • Free on site parking.
  • The opportunity to work with modern CAD software, including the latest version of SolidWorks.
  • A varied role working on bespoke products rather than producing the same drawing every single day.

Sound Like Your Kind of Thing?

If you enjoy CAD, understand manufacturing and get a bit of satisfaction from seeing something you’ve designed turn into a finished product, this could be right up your street.

We’re interested in speaking with people who have the technical ability, a good eye for detail and the confidence to work with customer drawings and specifications.

You don’t need to know everything about architectural cladding. But you do need to know your way around CAD.

Let’s put those SolidWorks skills to work on something people will actually see.
