Are you the kind of person who loves making things, using your hands and seeing a project come to life?

We are recruiting Assembly Operatives / Mechanical Fitters to join a large engineering manufacturer in Loughborough, working on the final assembly of large power transformers.

This is a skilled manufacturing role involving mechanical fitting, pipework, cooling assemblies, fasteners, flanges and controlled tooling, with long term work available and the potential to progress into a permanent position.

Position: Assembly Operative / Mechanical Fitter
Location: Loughborough
Pay: £18.58 per hour
Hours: Rotating 34 hour and 40 hour weeks, averaging 37 hours
Contract: Long-term temporary / temp to perm opportunity

There is no automatic permanent transfer at 12 weeks, but long term work is available and successful temporary workers may have the opportunity to move into a permanent role.

This is not a maintenance engineering position. You will be building and fitting transformer components as part of the manufacturing process.

What will you be doing?

  • Carrying out mechanical final assembly of power transformers.
  • Preparing, fitting, aligning and securing transformer components.
  • Installing pipework, flanges, valves, gaskets, fasteners and associated assemblies.
  • Preparing and installing transformer cooling equipment, including radiators/coolers, fans, pumps, headers and pipework where required.
  • Working from engineering drawings, Bills of Materials, specifications and production instructions.
  • Using hand tools, power tools and torque controlled tooling correctly.
  • Checking your work against required quality standards and identifying problems before they create rework.
  • Maintaining clean, organised work areas and good tool control.
  • Working safely around large transformer components and lifting operations.

What are we looking for?

You should have:

  • Good mechanical fitting or engineering assembly experience.
  • Experience working accurately from engineering drawings.
  • A good understanding of mechanical assemblies, fasteners, flanges and fitting work.
  • Manual Handling training.
  • Working at Height training.
  • Good practical problem solving skills and high standards of workmanship.
  • Great reliability, punctuality and a safety first attitude.

Overhead crane / slinging and lifting experience would be a strong advantage. The company may still consider an excellent Fitter without crane experience where their mechanical ability, drawing experience and other training are particularly strong.

MEWP/IPAF 3A and 3B and a Forklift licence would also be advantageous.

Experience from heavy engineering, power generation, electrical equipment manufacturing, plant/vehicle assembly or other substantial mechanical assembly environments could transfer well.

Working hours

Week One – Monday to Thursday, 7am-4pm | Friday off unless overtime is required (34 paid hours)

Week Two – Monday to Thursday, 7am-4pm | Friday, 7am-1pm (40 paid hours)

The average working week is 37 hours.

Overtime may be available and is currently paid at enhanced rates:

  • Friday overtime: 1.3x
  • Saturday: 1.5x
  • Sunday: 2x

Recruitment process

Suitable candidates will first speak with Your Recruiters to properly discuss your fitting experience, drawing ability, training and what you are looking for.

Successful applicants will then attend the manufacturing site to meet the production supervisors. Interviews normally last around 30-45 minutes and can usually be arranged between 8am and 3pm Monday to Friday. You will see the working environment and receive a proper explanation of the role before progressing.

This is a genuine long term opportunity with a major Loughborough engineering manufacturer, offering structured training and the potential to progress into permanent employment. Permanent employment is not guaranteed automatically at the end of 12 weeks.
